Albers studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule (Hamburg) before enrolling as a student at the Bauhaus in 1922, where she would go on to teach. In 1925, Anni married fellow Bauhaus instructor and famed Modernist painter and designer Josef Albers (1888 – 1976). Facing mounting Nazi pressure in Germany, the couple moved join the faculty at Black Mountain College in North Carolina in 1933, where she led the the weaving and textile design program. In 1949, Albers became the first designer to be granted a solo show at the Museum of Modern Art. In 1950, the Albers moved to Connecticut where Anni served as the chairman of Yale University’s design department.
