Item Details

Carl Rudolph Krafft (Ohio/Illinois/Pennsylvania; 1884 – 1938)
Untitled (autumn landsape)
Oil on canvas
Signed “Carl Krafft” with impressed thumb print to lower right

An original oil painting on canvas by well-listed American painter Carl Rudolph Krafft (Ohio/Illinois/Pennsylvania; 1884 – 1938). The painting depicts an impressionistic view of an autumnal landscape. A stone path leads to a gate in the foreground, which opens to a forested area glowing in blazing shades of orange and yellow. A wide valley dotted with houses extends towards the horizon. The painting is signed and marked with a thumbprint to the lower right corner. It is matted in white with a gold tone liner and is presented in an antique wooden frame with gold tone finish and a hanging wire.

Carl Rudolph Krafft was an Ohio native who became best known for his regional impressionistic work. He was a founder of the “Ozark School” of painters, and exhibited heavily in the Chicago area throughout his career. Many of his later oils contain a thumbprint near the signature, as Krafft was fearful of copyists and forgeries.
