Hans Wegner was a deeply admired and well-known furniture designer. His works are characterized by their mid-century Danish design principles, quality craftsmanship, and thoughtful functionality. A modernist, Wegner’s designs are aptly classified under “Organic Functionality”. As a child, Wegner began an apprenticeship to cabinetmaker H. F. Stahlberg. After military service, Wegner studied formally at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts and at the Architectural Academy (Copenhagen). He worked for a variety of workshops and studios before branching out to his own company mid-career. In 1949, Wegner designed “The Chair”, which became one of his most iconic pieces. Today, the designer’s licensed designs can be purchased from manufacturers. Original designs are housed in the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and more.
