Peggy Crawford was an accomplished photographer, writer, and educator. She is best remembered for her role in founding the Contemporary Arts Center. The artist received her formal education from Smith College with a year abroad in Paris. After graduation, Crawford and two friends founded the Modern Art Society – later becoming the Contemporary Arts Center. The grass-roots group soon began exhibiting local artists, later mounting exhibitions that included Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, Alexander Calder, and more. Crawford’s photographic subjects included from Cincinnati, New York City, Paris, and Yemen. In 2005, she published the book An American in Yemen: Travel Notes of a Photographer. In the Cincinnati area, her work has been exhibited at the Taft Museum, Cincinnati Art Museum, and local galleries. In 2015, her work was honored with a retrospective exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Center.
