Carol J. Mathews Orignal Oil Painting on Canvas "Fish Tank"
An original 1987 oil painting on canvas titled Fish Tank by Contemporary American artist Carol J. Mathews (1956-2015). The painting features abstracted depictions of underwater plants, with a red eel like creature swimming through the foliage. The work is rendered in flat layered shapes of vibrant color that stand out from the gray background. The work is signed, titled and dated to the verso, and is also marked with a stamp from the artist’s estate. The stretched canvas is presented unframed, awaiting your choice of presentation. A hanging wire and a printed artist statement are attached to the verso.
Mathews, known for her colorful and expressive paintings and drawings, describes her work as follows . . . having painted for over 25 years, it is difficult to describe my art but whimsical, abstract, and fantasy come to mind . . . After years of suffering from mental illness, Carol’s art became a crucial conduit for her internal turmoil. A portion of the proceeds from this sale will go to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
