Theodore Alexander "Althorp" Chinoiserie Secretary
A Chinoiserie secretary desk from the Althorp collection by Theodore Alexander. The wood case is painted black and enlivened with East Asian style landscape scenes with figures on all visible surfaces. It features a fall front with a prominent escutcheon that opens to reveal a figured veneer writing surface, which rests on two gold painted pull-out supports, and fitted interior with pigeon holes and drawers with lion head pulls. Below the fall front are two full-width drawers with machine-cut dovetail joints, keyholes, and bail pulls on embossed plates. The case rests on a walnut stand with cabriole legs with carved knees and slipper feet. A maker’s plaque is located inside one drawer.
