Whimsically Painted Windsor Style Chair by Bill Schiffer

Item Details

A whimsically painted Windsor style chair, painted by New York Artist Bill Schiffer. The wooden chair has an arched crest rail between thin stiles, over turned spindles. The seat has a removable, upholstered pad over an open space once strung with caning. The tapered legs are connected by three box stretchers, turned at the front. The entire piece is painted in bright yellow, blue, pink, green, orange, and red, with different sections in blocks of color, accents on the turns and legs, and the applied floral carving on the backrest painted in a rainbow of colors. It is signed and dated by the artist on the side of the seat.

Born in New York, Bill Schiffer rose to prominence as a painter and sculptor in the early 1980’s. Though he still works in many two dimensional and three dimensional art mediums, Schiffer is most well known for his unique handcrafted jewelry, which he started designing after a foray experimenting with wearable art in the fashion scene. Bill Schiffer’s art and jewelry has been shown in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, as well as major museums in Italy, Japan, Germany and the United States. His work has been featured in publications including Vogue, Elle, Bazaar, Women’s Wear Daily, Seventeen and Cosmopolitan.
