19th-Century Fischer J. Reticulated Ceramic Handled Centerpiece
A 19th-century Fischer J. large ceramic centerpiece bowl, Budapest, Hungary. Hand painted with polychrome enamel and gilt decoration featuring floral motif. Reticulated handles and diamond shaped plaques to both sides. Embossed medallions appears throughout. Marked to the underside of the footed base with a cobalt stamp and impressed mark.
Fischer J. Budapest was founded by Ignace Fischer in Pest, Hungary, in 1864. (Pest is the eastern half of modern Budapest which was united with the western half, Buda, in 1873). His pieces bear the mark ‘Fischer J.’ with the ‘J’ being the same letter as ‘I’ in Hungarian. The Fischer factory was bought by Zsolnay Pottery in 1895.
