19th-Century Zsolnay Ceramic Moon Vase

A 19th-century Zsolnay ceramic moon vase, Pécs, Hungary, ca. 1882. Ivory colored ground with hand painted polychrome and gilt decoration intricate floral motif. Two small handles to either side with scrolled feet. Marked to the underside with a large cobalt stamp.

Zsolnay Pottery was founded by Vilmos Zsolnay in Pécs, Hungary in 1853. Characterized by their Art Nouveau style pottery and figurines fired at high temperatures. Their trademark tower hallmark was not used until 1878, earlier pieces are unmarked. Introduced in 1893, many of the pieces appear with an ‘eosin’ glaze giving them a lustrous iridescent finish.
