19th-Century Zsolnay Reticulated Ceramic Vase

A 19th-century Zsolnay Pottery reticulated ceramic vase, Pécs, Hungary, ca. 1875-76. The vase has a lobed melon form body with ornate floral reticulation hand painted and decorated. Bulbous form lower neck with green medallions and a reticulated collar. Impressed to the underside, ‘ZSOLNAY, PECS, 2081.’

Zsolnay Pottery was founded by Vilmos Zsolnay in Pécs, Hungary in 1853. Characterized by their Art Nouveau style pottery and figurines fired at high temperatures. Their trademark tower hallmark was not used until 1878, earlier pieces are unmarked. Introduced in 1893, many of the pieces appear with an ‘eosin’ glaze giving them a lustrous iridescent finish.
