Zsolnay Ceramic Pitcher Designed by Lajos Mack

A Zsolnay ceramic pitcher with female figural handle designed by sculptor Lajos Mack (1876-1963), ca. 1901, Pécs, Hungary. The handle features an Art Nouveau nude female figure standing on her toes with her arms around the contour of the pinched spout. Decorated with vibrant blue colored glazes. To the underside is a raised factory roundel and impressed number ‘6570.’

Zsolnay Pottery was founded by Vilmos Zsolnay in Pécs, Hungary in 1853. Characterized by their Art Nouveau style pottery and figurines fired at high temperatures. Their trademark tower hallmark was not used until 1878, earlier pieces are unmarked. Introduced in 1893, many of the pieces appear with an ‘eosin’ glaze giving them a lustrous iridescent finish.
