Sid Burns 1977 Bronze Sculpture "Eight Plus Two"

Item Details

A 1977 bronze sculpture titled Eight Plus Two by Sid Burns (1916 – 1979). A WWII veteran who formerly owned and operated a small shoe repair business in Laguna Beach, California, the Oklahoma-born self-taught artist began sculpting at the age of 50 when he returned to the Southwest. His subjects were often cowboys and his sculptures are best known for their portrayals of frantic moments frozen in time when both man and beast are in peril. This exemplary work of Burns showcases some of his finest artistry from its daring pose of rider and horse suspended in mid-air, to his finesse with regards to rendering the horses’ musculature, expressive movement and tack. The piece captures the second of impact between a rodeo pick-up man and the rider he is attempting to rescue from getting thrown. The work is marked 1977, titled Eight Plus Two signed Sid Burns and numbered MB-15 to its base. The piece is presented on a round wooden swivel base that rests upon four turned wooden legs and a round pedestal base.
