Javanese Borobudur Style Carved Volcanic Stone Buddha Head
An antique Javanese, Indonesia, carved volcanic stone head in the style of the Borobudur temple. Borobudur is a 9th-century Mahayana Buddhist temple in Magelang, Central Java, Indonesia, and one of the world’s largest Buddhist temple. The volcanic stone carving depicts Buddha, finely carved with bow-shaped mouth and downcast eyes centered by a raised urna, flanked by pendulous pierced earlobes, and the hair in snail-shell curls over the conical ushnisha. The head is presented on a custom wood stand.
