Hand-Knotted Ersari Tribal Area Rug
A hand-knotted Ersari floral area rug. This wool-pile tribal rug is rendered in a palette of dark madder red, gray-black, azure, and pink. Its hybrid design begins with a pair of widely spaced eight-point star medallions in black over a red field. The field and medallions are filled with rectilinear sprays of flowers and stylized leaves. Framing the field are three wraparound borders as well as a horizontal panel at the rug’s top and bottom. Two Gul-i-badam minor borders are filled with boteh. These flank the major border, which contains an unusual reciprocal design consisting of mihrab-like shrouds enclosing trees of life and florets over black, alternating with floral sprays over cranberry. Panels at the top and bottom feature diamond lattice patterns. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at either end with kilim skirts in tan and mauve embellished with embroidered bands of blue, gray, and coral. Knotted fringe is made of wool, goat, and/or camel hair. The rug is unlabeled.
