Stephen Ray Oil Painting on Canvas "Papageno, Padlocked"
An oil painting on canvas titled Papageno, Padlocked by artist Stephen Ray, circa 1985. The piece depicts a representation of Papageno, a comical bird-catcher, from Mozart’s Opera The Magic Flute (1791). The subject wears a brown hat with the shape of a bird while holding a red flute with his left hand and a padlock inserted through his mouth. The depiction makes reference to the moment in scene one of the first act when the character has a padlock placed over this mouth as a warning not to lie. The painting is signed and dated by the artist in orange to the lower left corner. To the verso, artist’s name, date, title, and dimensions are inscribed in black ink. Presented on canvas without a frame, awaiting the presentation of choice.
