Roberta di Camerino was started by Giuliana Coen Camerino in 1945 post-WWII Italy and developed a cult following thanks to celebrity fans such as Coco Chanel, Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor. Camerino was one of the first designers to take fabrics designed for clothing and furniture use and reimagine them as handbags, such as soprarizzo velvet, a complex velvet, that she commissioned from the Tessiture Luigi Bevilacqua, who were known for ecclesiastical and upholstery velvets created on antique looms.
