Chuang Che was born in Beijing, China in 1934 and received his formal education from the National Taiwan Normal University. Chuang’s work primarily focuses on abstract landscapes that rendered the external appearance of nature while expressing their form and spirit. He also uses calligraphy as a mode to introduce lines, shapes, and structures. Chuang learned calligraphy from his father, Chuang Shang-Yen, who was a scholar and calligrapher. During the 1960s, an artistic group called the Fifth Moon Group was established and Chuang became one of its members. The group was influenced by American Abstract Expressionism and Western Existentialism. Chuang and the other members combined Chinese and Western culture, using the ‘spirit of the East as their backbone, while using Western materials, and advocating experimental blending of Eastern and Western techniques.’ Chuang’s artwork is housed in private and public collections throughout the world including the National Museum of History in Taipei, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Hong Kong Art Museum to name a few.
