Karel was part of an artist group formed in 1948 called COBRA, whose members strove to break away from current art movements and pursue more experimental work. Appel lived and worked in Amsterdam, Paris, Brazil, Yugoslavia, Mexico, Florence, and New York, and his prolific work is included in many important collections such as the Tate Modern Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
