Rouault is well-known for his figurative painting and printmaking, rendered in his distinctive style with flattened space and thick black outlines. As a teenager, Rouault was apprentice to a stained glass artisan. This early experience would hold a large influence over his artistic style. His art education also included classes at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs and the Louvre. Rouault was the director of the Musee Gustave Moreau for a period of time. He exhibited regularly with the Fauvists, but was never officially aligned with the artistic movement. Today, his original works can be found in the Musée National d’Art Moderne (Paris), The Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg), and more.
