Colin Vernon Wheeler was born in Dunedin, New Zealand in 1919. Moving to London for his education, Wheeler studied at the Canterbury School of Art and the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts before returning to New Zealand in 1951 to teach art at the Waitaki Boys’ High School in Oamaru. The artist quit his job in 1967 to focus on his painting and quickly gained recognition for his dynamic rural landscapes of North Otago and Oamaru township, winning the Queen’s Service Medal for services to art in 1987. He received numerous other awards throughout his life including the National Bank of New Zealand Mural Competition and was represented by a number of prestigious galleries throughout New Zealand. The artist’s work has been sold at auction many times and is held in a number of private collections.

- wear to the edges of the wooden frame; toning and foxing to the mat; accretion to the composition.
