Ludwig Jacob Weber, born 1824 in Biskirchen, Germany in what was then the Prussian empire, sits with his wife Justina Marie for a set of portraits. Presented in gilt gesso frames the couple are elegantly shown dressed in their finery. The woman, gazing out contentedly, wears cross earrings with a delicately rendered brooch fastened to the collar of her dress. Acting almost as a locket, the brooch contains a photograph of her husband taken when he was 40 in 1864. The two portraits are accompanied by the brooch worn by Justina Marie Weber in the portrait. The photo of Ludwig Jacob featured on the brooch was buried with him when he passed.
