Van Hoople is known for his mid century modern paintings created with high relief impasto. He studied art at the University of Texas, and later at the Art Center in Los Angeles. He apprenticed under P.T. Blackburn, the scenic art director of Paramount Studios, and then went on to work as a set designer there.
