Born in Denver, Colorado in 1950, Michael Lynch was interested in art from an early age. As a teenager he moved with his family to Chicago, where he first studied painting after seeing the work of the American Impressionists at the Chicago Art Institute. After attending college, and a few years spent in Washington D.C. and traveling throughout the U.S. and abroad, Lynch returned to Colorado and began his professional career as a full time artist in 1978. He has always preferred to paint from life, using his small plein air works as reference for his large studio paintings, and has taught his methods in numerous workshops throughout the western United States. His work resides in numerous private and corporate collections in the U.S., Europe and Japan, and he has been represented by many prestigious galleries, including John Pence in San Francisco, and Gerald Peters and Fenn Gallery in Santa Fe.
