Hugo Sperger was born in Northern Italy in 1922, and immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1929, settling in New York and farming. He served overseas with the U.S. Army during WWII and upon returning home worked in Michigan and Indiana factories. He eventually married Faye Reed, and moved to her home state of Kentucky. After Hugo’s cancer diagnosis in 1970, Faye bought him some paint, and he began to produce hundreds of paintings and woodcarvings in a wide variety of subject matter, leading to his inclusion in important folk art exhibitions and writings beginning in the 1980s.
